Eines seiner frühesten Werke, dieses Gemälde zeigt eines der Lieblingsthemen von Murillo, die Jungfrau und das Kind. Die Jungfrau sitzt in einem pulsierenden roten Kleid auf einem tiefblauen Tuch und hält das unbekleidete Kind, das auf ihrem Schoß steht. Die beiden Figuren halten sich in einer zarten Umarmung, wie nur eine Mutter und ein Kind tun können, was ein typisches Element von Murillos Gemälden ist. Diese zarte Berührung ist ein realistisches Element, das in allen Gemälden von Murillo vorhanden ist, fast so, wie es ein Momentaufnahme der beiden Figuren ist, bevor sie vollständig gestellt wurden, als ob in einem kandierten Foto.
