Eines seiner frühesten werke , dieses gemälde zeigt eines von Murillo’s lieblingsthemen , die jungfrau und das kind . Die jungfrau sitzt in einem leuchtend roten kleid auf einem tiefblauen schal , das unbekleidete kind halten , wer steht auf ihrem schoß . Die beiden figuren umarmen sich zärtlich , wie es nur eine mutter und ein kind tun können , das ist ein typisches element von Murillo’s gemälde . Diese zarte berührung weist auf ein realistisches element hin, das in allen vorhanden ist Murillo’s gemälde , fast so, als wäre es eine momentaufnahme der beiden figuren, bevor sie vollständig gestellt wurden , wie auf einem ehrlichen foto .
