Ungewöhnlich für die Verkündigung der Geburt Christi, wie in dem Schlafzimmer der Jungfrau in der Nacht von Kerzenlicht, diese lebendige Ölskizze wird schnell auf einer rauen Platte gemalt und enthält zahlreiche Änderungen. Es ist ein frühes Beispiel eines Modells – ein Vorschlag oder Modell für ein Projekt, das dem Patron gezeigt werden könnte. Obwohl es mit einem Altarstück Bedoli in den 1550er Jahren für eine Kirche in seiner Heimatstadt, in der Nähe von Parma, gemalt ist, ist seine hohe Qualität von Bedoli berühmte Cousine, Parmigianino, dem es lange zugeschrieben wurde. Es muss das Altarwerk um eine beträchtliche Zeit vorschreiben.
