Et in Arcadia Ego (The Arcadian Shepherds)(c. 1618-1622) wird nun in der Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica von Rom gezeigt. Das Bild ist mit Guercinos Flaying of Marsyas von Apollo im Palazzo Pitti (1618) verbunden, in dem die gleiche Gruppe von Hirten anwesend ist. das Porträt zeigt die beiden jungen Hirten, die auf einen Schädel starren, mit einer Maus und einer Blase, auf einen Kippus mit den Worten Et in Arcadia ego platziert ("Ich bin auch in Arcadia"). Letzteres ist ein moralischer Bezug auf den Tod. Der Satz erscheint zum ersten Mal in Kunst und Architektur in diesem Werk. Die Ikonographie des memento mori-Thema war in Rom und Venedig seit der Renaissance-Zeiten sehr beliebt.
