Matisse malte zwei Versionen dieses Gemäldes, dieser mit schärferen Linien und helleren Farben als die erste Version. Obwohl der Titel „The Young Sailor“ ist, war das Modell für das Gemälde eigentlich ein 18-jähriger Fischer namens Germain Augustin Barthelemy Montarges. Das Stück wurde in Matisses Haus in Coillioure gemalt, während dessen, was als sein Fauvre Sommer bekannt war, während dessen er Selbstporträts malte, als er den jungen Fischer überzeugte, für ihn zu posieren. Das Gemälde hängt nun im Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, wo es eines der am meisten geschätzten Gemälde des Museums ist.
