Als dieses Gemälde im Salon von 1866 gezeigt wurde, versicherten einige Kritiker Courbets "lack of taste" sowie sein Modell "ungainly" Pose und "disheveled hair". Sie waren jedoch nicht einhellig, und der französische Staat betrachtete es kurz als Kauf. Courbet selbst schrieb: "Nach fünfundzwanzig Jahren des Kampfes kämpfe ich immer noch; und heute mache ich immer noch genau die gleiche Art von Malerei, die am Anfang die gesamte offizielle Welt gegen mich entfesselte . . . . . Das provokative Bild fand Gunst bei einer jüngeren Künstlergeneration. Manet begann seine Version des Themas (89.21.3) im selben Jahr; und Cézanne trug offenbar ein kleines Foto der gegenwärtigen Arbeit in seiner Brieftasche.
