Schön und stilvoll, Serena Pulitzer Lederer war ein Star der Wiener Gesellschaft aus dem 14. Jahrhundert. Für dieses Porträt, in Auftrag ihres Mannes, hat der Industrielle August Lederer, Klimt weiche, sinnliche Pinselstriche verwendet, um Serena als Erscheinung in Weiß zu präsentieren. "Eine aufrechte Blume, langgestreckt... wie eine schwarze Tulpe", begeisterte einen Kritiker, als das Gemälde 1901 auf der zehnten Ausstellung der Wiener Secession gezeigt wurde – eine Gruppe, die Klimt und andere Künstler vier Jahre früher gründeten, um die Stadt an die Spitze der internationalen Kunstwelt zu stellen. Anschließend bildeten die Lederers die feinste Sammlung von Klimts Arbeit in privaten Händen.
