Einer von zwei Blockade-running-deutschen Handels-U-Booten, Deutschland kam zum ersten Mal in den USA am 9. Juli 1916 in Baltimore. Nachdem sie den Atlantik praktisch leer überquert hatten, wurde ein Teil ihres Eisenballasts verwendet, um Gedenkmedaillen zu kreieren, wie diese.
