Die erste U-Bahn-Linie wurde 1900 in Paris anlässlich der Weltausstellung in Paris eröffnet. Hector Guimard entwarf die ersten U-Bahn-Stationen mit der formalen Sprache des Jugendstils. Er nutzte industrielle Materialien wie Eisen und Glas, um filigrane und transparente Strukturen zu schaffen, die an Knospen, Stängel und Blätter erinnern. Die gusseisernen Gitter, die sich an fast allen Stationseingängen befanden, sind mit einem vegetal gestalteten Schild verziert. Im unteren Bereich bilden die gekrümmten, gewebten Linien einen Brief.
