Geboren in Philadelphia, Benbridge studierte in London und in Rom unter Anton Raphael Mengs und Pompeo Batoni. 1772 ließ sich der Künstler in Charleston nieder, wo er nach Jeremia Theus 1774 zum modischen Portraitisten der Stadt wurde. Diese Miniatur zeigt Benbridges bunten, linearen und kribisch realistischen Porträtstil, der dem von John Singleton Copley bemerkenswert ähnlich ist. Ab etwa 1770 ist es eine der frühesten Bemühungen des Künstlers im Medium, doch zeigt es mehr Verfeinerung als eine Reihe seiner späteren Werke. Der Fall, der mit Amethysten eingestellt wird, die der Lavendel-Taille des Herren entsprechen, ist originell.
