Sammler, Designer und Schriftsteller Thomas Hope (1770 – 1831), war der Skord einer schottischen Familie von Bankern. Er ist bekannt für die Einführung des neoklassizistischen Geschmacks nach England. Hoffnung für die Öffentlichkeit eröffnet sein Haus mit seiner Sammlung von alten und zeitgenössischen Kunst. Er veröffentlichte seine Forschung zum Thema Innendekoration im Jahre 1807, in einem Buch mit dem Titel Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, das während der Regency Periode sehr einflussreich war. In den Jahren 1787-1795 Hope tourte Mittelmeerländer. In diesem Porträt wurde Hope im türkischen Kostüm dargestellt und eine Moschee ist im Hintergrund sichtbar. Sein Kostüm, Pfeife, Kopfschmuck und der Dolch in seinem Gürtel ähneln der Kalyoncu Gravur in Choiseul-Gouffiers Album Voyage Pittoresque de la Grèce. Auf der Rückseite des Bildes steht fest, dass in dieser Darstellung Hope sein „Galcondgi“ Kostüm trägt, das er im Orient trug. Die Ölversion dieses Porträts, von unbekanntem Datum, von Sir William Beechey, die heute in der National Portrait Gallery, war 1799.
