Janet Halleck Drake war die Tochter des New Yorker Dichters Joseph Rodman Drake und benannt nach dem Freund ihres Vaters, dem Dichter Fritz Greene Halleck. Sie war etwa sieben Jahre alt, als sie für Inman saß, der sie in eine liebliche Waldlandschaft setzte. Miss Drakes Top-Hut ist etwas emblematisch für den Künstler, der bekannt war, einen über die Stadt zu tragen. Inman präsentierte 1825 das Porträt in New York und ein Reviewer fand es „schön. „
