Dieses Werk, eine von vielen Versionen des von Daumier gemalten Themas, zeigt eine Passage von Don Quixote, dem epischen spanischen Roman von Miguel de Cervantes (1547–161616). Der alte Ritter, begleitet von seinem Squire, Sancho Panza, begegnet dem Körper eines toten Maules, nach langer Exposition mit den Elementen in einer wilden Landschaft emaciated. Die Begegnung ist eine in einer Serie, die die Breite der menschlichen Torheit zeigt, ein Thema, das die fiktiven Charaktere von Cervantes mit der panoply modernen Typen verbindet, die viel von Daumiers Kunst bevölkern.
