Butler wird als Gründer der American Fine Arts Society ausgezeichnet. Geboren in New York City, war er ein früher Befürworter für die Stadt Erholung und Schönheit. Butler überzeugte Andrew Carnegie, den Bau eines Freizeit-Manmade-Sees in der Nähe der Princeton University zu finanzieren. Ursprünglich ein Patentanwalt, Butler gab diese Praxis auf, um Malerei im Jahre 1884 zu verfolgen.
