Repins erste anerkannte Arbeit nach dem Abschluss der Kunstschule, Barge Haulers auf der Volga wurde sofort von Kritikern gelobt. Obwohl ihre soziale Botschaft in ihrer Darstellung der unmenschlichen Arbeitsbedingungen, die von den Räuchern zu sehen waren, kristallklar war, wurde die Arbeit vom zweiten Sohn des Kaisers, dem Großherzog Wladimir Alexandrowitsch, gekauft und in ganz Europa als Beispiel der russischen Realistischen Malerei ausgestellt. Die Arbeit war wild populär, und es wurde in ganz Russland parodiiert und als Grundlage für politische Cartoons verwendet. Es war auch die Inspiration für den beliebten russischen Song “The Song of the Volga Boatmen. „
