Ruisdael präsentiert Landschaftsmalerei von der gewalttätigen Seite der Natur, im Gegensatz zu der Ruhe, die die Arbeit der vorherigen Generation dominierte. In einer Komposition, die typisch für die Verwendung eines niedrigen Horizonts ist, ist ein Boot unter den Schatten im Vordergrund Fersen über im starken Wind. Im Hintergrund sind andere ähnlich Wind-Tosed Boote kaum eingezeichnet. Der eigentliche Protagonist der Malerei sind nicht die Segelschiffe, sondern die Größe und Kraft der Natur: der Wind und das stürmische Meer.
