Ochtervelt war Mitschüler von Pieter de Hooch unter Nicolaas Bercham in Haarlem. Er arbeitete von 1655 bis 1674 in seiner Heimat Rotterdam und zog dann nach Amsterdam. Diese typische Szene des eleganten häuslichen Lebens wurde um 1670 gemalt, als Ochtervelt stark von Gerard ter Borch beeinflusst wurde.
