Hier ist Whistlers Pinselarbeit wild und voller Leben. Er benutzte breite Striche, um das Papier mit freien Wäschen zu sättigen, dann den Leuchtturm und die Figuren in Gouache mit einem schönen Punkt nach dem Trocknen der Wäschen detailliert. Die Technik bezieht sich auf Werke von 1883–84, obwohl Whistler wahrscheinlich das Mersey besuchte – ein Fluss im Nordwesten Englands – in den frühen 1870er Jahren, während er in der Speke Hall (Heimat seiner Mäzen Mr. und Mrs. Frederick R. Leyland) und wieder in 1891, während er eine Ausstellung in der Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.
