Constance Macdonald Gilchrist (1865-1946), bekannt als "das Original Gaiety Girl", hatte eine erfolgreiche Karriere auf der Londoner Bühne in Lichtkomödie und vaudeville. Whistler stellte sie in seinem Studio vor, als sie auf der Bühne des Gaiety-Theaters im Springpfrope-Tanz erschien. Neben einem Portrtait der beliebten jungen Tänzerin ist das Gemälde ein Experiment in Design und Farbe, das einen visuellen Dialog zwischen soliden Formen und flachen, dekorativen Mustern darstellt.
