Theodore Duret (1838–1927), Erbe einer Firma von Cognac Händlern, war ein Sammler, orientalischer und Kunstkritiker. Ein früher Champion von Courbet, Manet und den Impressionisten wurde er von Manet nach Whistler eingeführt. Er stellte 1883 im Whistlers London Studio in der 13 Tite Street für dieses Porträt. Auf Wunsch von Duret, Whistler malte ihn in vollem Abendkleid, aber Whistler schlug vor, dass er einen rosa Domino halten, eine Ergänzung notwendig für die dekorative Anordnung der Komposition. Whistler arbeitete über eine lange Zeit am Portrait, obwohl die fertige Arbeit letztlich wie eine schnelle Skizze aussieht. Als sie im Pariser Salon 1885 ausgestellt wurde, wurde sie von vielen als das beste Porträt Durets angesehen, das von den großen Realisten der Zeit gemalt wurde.
