Bard widmete sich seiner Karriere als selbstfahrender Künstler, "Porträts" der Dampfboote und Segelschiffe zu malen, die den Hudson-Fluss und die Gewässer um Manhattan durchquerten. Er erhielt oft Provisionen von Bootsbauern und Betreibern. Dieses seltene Doppelporträt stellt sein bekanntestes Werk dar, mit dem Dampfboot Thomas Hunt und der Yacht Amerika – Letzteres, das nach seinem gefeierten Sieg im August 1851 im ersten America’s Cup-Rennen nach New York aus England zurückgekehrt ist. Bard eroberte den Wettbewerb zwischen Segel und Dampf und feierte die Fortschritte in der Konstruktion und Konstruktion dieser Schiffe.
