J.W. Thompson verbrachte viele der 1950er Jahre, die Pazifik-Nordwest-Inder fotografierten. Er nahm zahlreiche Fotografien in den Celilo Falls und in indischen Gemeinden in der Nähe des Columbia-Flusses auf und nahm regionale Essenssammlungen, Wurzelfeste, Tänze und Paraden auf. Er nahm schließlich Tausende von 35mm Dias von Indianern in Washington State. Fast 3.000 seiner Bilder von östlichen Washington Indianern sind jetzt in der Sammlung von Maryhill Museum of Art. Eine ähnliche Anzahl von Fotografien der West-Washington-Inder sind im Museum of History & Industry in Seattle.
