Jan Steen porträtierte sich als selbstbewusster Künstler, anständig in Schwarz, mit einem enthüllten Vorhang im Hintergrund. Mit dieser Art von Selbstporträt folgte er dem Beispiel berühmter Meister wie Titian und Rembrandt. Das Porträt ist eine Ausnahme in Steens Werk. Er hat sich normalerweise in der Rolle des Komikers gemalt.
