Das Gemälde ist in einer punktillistischen Technik lackiert. Das Porträt wird nach rechts gelegt, dem Betrachter zugewandt, während sie ein Buch im Licht einer Petroleumlampe studiert. Sie ist in einem rosa Kleid gekleidet, so genannte Reformkleidung, und hat einfach ihr Haar erhöht. Auf dem Tisch auf der linken Seite befindet sich teilweise die Petrollampe neben einer Vase der Rosen auf einem Tisch mit einem geblühten Teppich. Blumen in einer großen Vase im Hintergrund sind visuell in das Muster der dekorativen Tapete integriert.
