In 1894–95, Thadée und Misia Natanson in Auftrag gegeben von Vuillard eine Reihe von fünf dekorativen Panels bekannt als The Album. Der ungewöhnliche Charakter dieser Werke entsprach dem der Ferienwohnung Natansons" Paris, einem großen offenen Raum, der sich an mehrere kleine Alkovenbereiche anschließt. Sein unkonventionelles Dekor spiegelte Misias Geschmack wider, der von der englischen Kunst- und Handwerksbewegung inspiriert wurde. Die Wohnung diente oft als alternatives Büro für Thadées lebhaftes Avantgarde-Journal, La Revue blanche. Zu dieser einflussreichen Publikation gehören Claude Debussy, Léon Blum, Stéphane Mallarmé und André Gide. Die eindrucksvollen symbolistischen Qualitäten von Mallarmés Poesie und Debussy-Musik finden in Vuillards fünf Platten, die ihren Namen von diesem Gemälde nehmen.
