Millet schrieb an seinen Patron Frédéric Hartmann am 18. Februar 1873, dass er dieses Bild für den Dealer Durand-Ruel fast fertig gestellt hatte: "Es ist ein Hügel, mit einem einzigen Baum fast nackt Blätter, und das ich versucht habe, ziemlich weit zurück in das Bild zu setzen. Die Zahlen sind eine Frau von hinten gesehen und ein paar Truthähne. Ich habe auch versucht, das Dorf im Hintergrund auf einer unteren Ebene anzuzeigen." In der Nähe von Barbizon lebte Millet von 1849 bis zu seinem Tod. Der Turm des benachbarten Weilers Chailly-en-Bière ist in der Entfernung sichtbar.
