Verwirbelnde Kleidung und Haare fügen sich gefühlvoll aufgeschwungene Augen und einen gekippten Kopf, um eine Emotion zu kondensieren – perhaps schmerzhafte Sehnsucht – Typisch der Têtes d’expression. Solche "expressiven Köpfe" waren Teil der akademischen Ausbildung von Künstlern, aber auch als eigenständige Kunstwerke Berufung genossen. Diese besondere Pose erfasst den späten Achtzehnten Jahrhundert Anstieg des Sentimentalismus, eine weitgehend literarische Bewegung, die auf die Emotionen der Leser zog, die Greuze verwendet, um große visuelle Wirkung.
