Tiermalerei war ein ausgeprägtes und gut respektiertes Genre in Frankreich aus dem 18. Jahrhundert, wo die Jagd eine zentrale Aktivität im aristokratischen Leben war. Oudry, der führende Tiermaler aus dem Jahrhundert, präsentierte diese Leinwand und das nahe gelegene Dog Guarding Dead Game auf dem Salon von 1753. Während sie nicht als Anhänger konzipiert wurden, wurden die beiden von Ange Laurent de La Live de Jully zusammengehängt, einem bedeutenden Sammler in der Entwicklung, was noch als eine neuartige Idee in Paris aus dem 18. Jahrhundert betrachtet wurde: die Schirmherrschaft zeitgenössischer französischer Maler.
