Der in der Nähe von Frankfurt geborene und in Rom ausgebildete Künstler zog 1760 nach England. Geschützt von George III und Queen Charlotte wurde er 1768 vom König zur neu gegründeten Königlichen Akademie ernannt. Diese kleine, präzise gemalte ganze Länge eines Mannes in kirchlichem Kleid ist das erste Werk von Zoffany, um in die Sammlung des Museums einzusteigen.
