Benjamin Watkins Leigh (1781-1849) wurde in Chesterfield County, Virginia, dem Sohn des Reverend William Leigh (d. 1787) und Elizabeth Watkins (d. 1799) geboren. Er besuchte das College of William und Mary, studierte Jura und begann in Petersburg in 1802 zu praktizieren. Nach dem Tod seiner Eltern fungierte er als Wächter für seinen jüngeren Bruder William. Leigh heiratete dreimal: am 24. Dezember 1802, mit seinem Cousin Mary Selden Watkins; am 30. November 1813, Susan Colston; am 24. November 1821, Julia Wickham (1801-1883), die älteste Tochter von John Wickham. Ihr Sohn Benjamin Watkins Leigh, Jr., (1831-1863) starb bei der Schlacht von Gettysburg während des amerikanischen Bürgerkriegs.
