Durand wollte historische Themen malen, aber für Porträts besiedelt, Werbung, die “sein demütige Versuche, in denen seine besten Endeavours nicht wollen, wird mit Akzeptanz treffen und Zufriedenheit geben.” Dieses Porträt zeigt wahrscheinlich Susannah, die Frau von Peter Bontecou, die auch von Durand gemalt wurde. Es mag aber ein Porträt seiner Schwester sein, Mary.
