Als Nancy Pelosi (geboren 1940) zum Sprecher des US-Repräsentantenhauses wurde, wurde sie die hochrangig gewählte Frau in der US-Geschichte. Pelosi wurde in eine politische Familie geboren. Ihr Vater war ein Kongressabgeordneter, der Bürgermeister von Baltimore wurde, und ihre Mutter organisierte demokratische Frauen. Nach dem Umzug nach San Francisco arbeitete Pelosi auf dem Weg und wurde 1987 zum Kongress gewählt. Sie wurde die erste Frau, die 2003 eine Partei im Kongreß führte und als Sprecher von 2007 bis 2011 diente. Beide Verbündeten und Kritiker sagen, dass sie bei der Verabschiedung des Affordable Care Act entscheidend war. 2018 gewannen Demokraten die Kontrolle über den Kongress und sprachen erneut.
