Im Sommer 1884 veranstaltete Twachtman – das Studium an der Académie Julian in Paris – ein Haus mit seiner Familie in Arques-la-Bataille, in der Normandie, und konzentrierte sich auf die Erfassung der ruhigen Schönheit der Gegend auf Leinwand. In dieser Arbeit porträtierte er den Rand des Béthune, ein Nebenfluss der Arques, umrandet von Reeden und Wiesenblumen. Zurück in seinem Pariser Studio im folgenden Winter, Twachtman transponiert diese naturalistische Skizze in die monumentale Leinwand Arques-la-Bataille, in der Nähe zu sehen.
