Der Sitter war mit Richard Brinsley Sheridan (1751–1816), einem berühmten Dramatiker und Mitglied des Parlaments verheiratet. In diesem Portrait, das 1797 an der Royal Academy gezeigt wurde, schlägt sie eine theatralische Pose in der Guise eines Landarbeiters, der ihren Sohn Charles auf der Schulter trägt. Diese Art von Porträts zeichnete sich durch die idealisierte Darstellung der ländlichen Armut aus, die als eine Form des Rollenspiels für die Londoner Publikum modisch geworden war.
