Boxing faszinierte britische Künstler und Schriftsteller aus dem späten achtzehnten Jahrhundert und bietet ein Spektakel, das Gewalt mit schönen Körpern kombiniert. Humphreys Manager beauftragte dieses Porträt vor einem gefeierten Spiel, und das Gemälde verbreitete sich in gedruckten Reproduktionen. Hoppner zeigte den jungen Boxer auf dem Rasen in seiner defensiven Haltung, Tragen Brüste, Seidenstrümpfe und Pumpen. Bouts wurden zu dieser Zeit mit bloßen Fäusten gekämpft und ihre Brutalität erhöht.
