Mit Louis Comfort Tiffany war John La Farge ein Pionier der Glasmalerei in den USA. Aquarell war besonders gut für die Entwicklung der Designs geeignet, da die Transparenz des Mediums die glühenden Edelsteintöne des Glases vorschlagen könnte. Herbst Scattering Leaves, eine allegorische Darstellung der Saison, wurde ursprünglich als Glasfenster-Vorschlag für ein Privathaus auf Long Island erstellt. Obwohl die Mäzen ein anderes La Farge Design einer Figur im klassischen Garn ausgewählt haben, stellte der Künstler die lyrische Aquarell als eigenständiges Werk aus.
