Abbeville war seit seinem ersten Besuch auf der kontinentalen Tour von 1835 einer der beliebtesten Ruskins. Besonders bewunderte er den spätgotischen Stil in der Kirche St. Wulfran: 1848 besuchte er Salisbury kurz bevor er nach Abbeville reiste, und wurde von dem kopfhaften Kontrast zwischen der Schwere des frühen Englischen und dem „luscious richness“ der Veranda des Hl. Wulfran getroffen. In seinem Vortrag „The Flamboyant Architecture of the Valley of the Somme“ am 29. Januar 1869 präsentierte er dieses Bild zusammen mit mehreren anderen.
