Auf der 1848 Tour durch Nordfrankreich reisten John und Effie Ruskin von Mont St Michel nach Coutances, St Lô und Bayeux, bevor sie am 22. September 1848 nach Caen fuhren und die ersten zwei Wochen im Oktober nach Rouen fuhren. In Caen zog Ruskin die Kirche St. Sauveur aus einem Fenster in einem benachbarten Café. Dies ist eine von zwei identischen Zeichnungen: das andere ist im Fogg Art Museum an der Harvard University. Für die Ausstellung von Charles Eliot Norton 1879 in Boston, Ruskin machte eine Reihe von Kopien von einigen seiner besten Zeichnungen, "ein wenig Angst zu riskieren" die Originale auf einem Atlantik Kreuzung.
