Während der Besuche von 1849-50 und 1851-52 Ruskin verbrachte zwei Winter sammeln Material für The Stones von Venedig, eine Arbeit, die sich als sehr einflussreich in der Entwicklung der viktorianischen Architektur erwiesen. Dieses architektonische Notizbuch, das als „Door Book“ bekannt ist, ist eine der zehn Serien, die Ruskin verwendet hat, um Details und Messungen von Aspekten der architektonischen Merkmale aufzuzeichnen, sie mit Arbeitsblättern und Zeichnungen sorgfältig überkreuzen. Die kleineren Notebooks werden von Ruskin nach Inhalten, „Door Book“, „House Book 1“, „House Book 2“, „Palace Book“, „Gothic Book“ und „Bit Book“ benannt.
