In ihrer Tour durch 1838 erweiterten die Ruskins ihren normalen Weg nach Schottland, um das Land von Sir Walter Scott zu erkunden. Das Datum dieser Zeichnung widerspricht der Sequenz von John James Ruskins Reiseroute und ist der einzige Beweis, dass die Familie nach Edinburgh zurückgekehrt ist: Rosslyn liegt ein paar Meilen südlich. Diese und die Studie von Melrose Abbey sind außergewöhnlich größer als jede andere von Ruskins 1838 oder 1837 Zeichnungen.
