die inspiration für dieses bild kam während einer bootsexpedition, die sargent im september in pangbourne auf der themse unternahm 1885 , mit dem amerikanischen künstler edwin austin abbey , währenddessen sah er chinesische laternen zwischen bäumen und lilien hängen . er begann das bild, als er bei dem maler f wohnte . D. . hirse am broadway , Worcestershire , kurz nach seinem umzug von paris nach großbritannien . Zuerst benutzte er die Millets's five-year-old tochter katharine als sein vorbild , aber sie wurde bald von polly und dorothy ersetzt ( Dolly ) Barnard , die töchter des illustrators frederick barnard , weil sie genau die haarfarbe hatten, die sargent suchte . Dolly , im alter von elf jahren , ist links ; Polly , im alter von sieben jahren , es ist rechts .
