Paul Gauguin und Vincent van Gogh hatten eine frühe Freundschaft, die in eine Einladung nach Arles, Frankreich, wo van Gogh wollte, dass Gauguin bei ihm bleiben und eine Kunstkolonie schaffen. Dieses Gemälde wurde während Gauguins Aufenthalt in Arles fertiggestellt, indem van Gogh sein berühmtes Werk Sunflowers darstellte. Leider waren Gaugin und Van Gogh nicht in der Lage, ihre Kunstkolonie zu schaffen, da Gauguin nur zwei Monate blieb. Das Paar stritten sich, und im Dezember 1888 konfrontierte Gauguin van Gogh mit einer Rasierklinge. Van Gogh, Panik, floh zu einem Bordell, wo er seinen unteren linken Ohrstaube abgeschnitten hat. Gauguin später ging und die beiden sahen sich nie wieder.
