Das Thema dieses erstaunlich vitalen Porträts war ein wohlhabender Boston-Händler. Er bemalte sich mit einem lockeren, aber eleganten Banyan oder Lounge Robe – einer beliebten Mode des Gentlemans zur Zeit – und einem Turban statt einer formellen Perücke. Am eindrucksvollsten über das Porträt ist sein überzeugendes Gefühl der Realität, das Copley durch verschiedene Mittel erreichte. Er bemalte jede Falte von Stoff und Muster in Sherburnes Damaskkleid sowie jede fleischige Falte auf seinem Gesicht und den Händen. Ebenso schuf Copley durch die starke Beleuchtung des Bildes von links eine greifbar solide Figur.
