Ophelia (1894) ist ein Ölgemälde des englischen Pre-Raphaelite Malers John William Waterhouse. Ophelia ist die Tochter von Polonius, Schwester zu Laertes, und verworfen Liebhaber von Hamlet in Shakespeares Tragödie Hamlet. Ophelia ist ein Symbol der Unschuld, die verrückt geworden ist. Eine dutiful Tochter, sie wird manipuliert auf Hamlet und muss seine demütigenden und brutalen Bemerkungen tragen. Sie glaubt ihm, verrückt zu sein und traurig zu kommentieren "O, was ein edler Geist ist hier o'erthrown." Als sie Hamlets Zuneigung verloren hatte, wird sie selbst wütend, wenn ihr Vater von Hamlet getötet wird. Ihre verrückte Szene (akt IV, Szene 5) ist eine der bekanntesten in der westlichen Literatur. Ihr Wahnsinn und Tod und das Verhalten von Hamlet an ihrem Grab entzünden Laertes weiter zu Rache.
