Mazo war Velázquezs Assistent und Schwiegersohn, der 1633 seine Tochter Francisca heiratete und viele der Techniken und Formate des älteren Künstlers mimierte. Hier porträtiert er María Teresa, Tochter von König Philip IV von Spanien und zukünftige Königin von Frankreich, um etwa sieben Jahre alt. Obwohl sie ein starres Gerichtkleid trägt, verleiht ihr Schoßhund dem Gemälde eine für Velázquezs innovative Porträts von königlichen Kindern typische informelle Gestalt. Die durch den roten Vorhang am oberen rechten sichtbaren Putti offenbaren, dass Mazo wieder eine mit einer ganz anderen Komposition bemalte Leinwand verwendet, eine häufige Praxis in sogar den hochrangigen Werkstätten.
