José Gonzales wurde 1887 in Spanien geboren. 1906 zieht er nach Paris, wo er sich Juan Gris nennt. Er denkt, dass dieser Name eher für eine Karriere als Karikaturkünstler geeignet ist, was er im Sinn hat. In Paris schließt er sich der Künstlergruppe an, die sich um Picasso gebildet hat und zu einem der Väter des Kubismus wird. Gris greift in das ein, was er verführerische Malerei nennt. Zuerst wendet er visuelle Elemente auf die Leinwand wie Linie, Form und Farbe an. Dann bestimmt er, welche figurativen Elemente in diesem Muster gefunden werden können. Wie die anderen Kubisten hat Juan Gris eine ausgesprochene Vorliebe für musikalische Motive. Die Kubisten sind besonders fasziniert von der Form der Musikinstrumente. Griechen
