Ein Maler-Etcher, der tief an einem naturalistischen Ansatz für Malerei und Grafik interessiert war, zeigt Bastien-Lepage häufig Szenen des Alltags auf dem Land. Er war mit solchen Szenen vertraut, als er auf einer Farm aufwuchs. Neben der Erstellung von naturalistischen Porträts hat der Künstler in der Tradition der Realisten Gustave Courbet und Jean-François Millet Bauern auf den Feldern aufgenommen. Dieses Ätzen ist typisch für seine bevorzugte Materie, zeigt einen einsamen heroischen Bauern, Hand-on-Hip mit einem hölzernen Rake, der auf ihrer Schulter nach einem Tag ruht.
