Der Marquis de Dion und sein Mechaniker, Georges Bouton, erfand diesen Ein-Zylinder, Viertakt (Einlass, Kompression, Freigabe und Auspuff), 1,5-Horsepower, 25-Kilogramm Benzinmotor im Jahre 1895. Das Auslaßventil wurde gesteuert, aber das Benzin wurde automatisch über ein Ventil zugelassen, das beim Kolben geöffnet wurde.
