Ivan Albright malte dieses glanzvolle Porträt für die Oscar-gekrönte Filmanpassung von Oscar Wildes 1891 Roman The Picture of Dorian Gray. In Wildes Geschichte beauftragt Dorian Gray ein Porträt von sich selbst als attraktiver junger Mann und tauscht später seine Seele für ein immer ehrwürdiges Aussehen. Da der immer noch handliche Gray ein immer unlösliches und böses Leben führt, verrottet seine gemalte Repräsentation und Verfall, was das Ausmaß seiner moralischen Korruption offenbart. Albrights Renommee als Maler der Macabre machte ihn zur idealen Wahl von Albert Lewin, dem Regisseur des Films, um das schreckliche Bild von Gray zu malen. Obwohl der Film in Schwarz und Weiß gedreht wurde, filmte Lewin das gemalte Porträt in Farbe, um Grays schockierende Transformation hervorzuheben.
