Cox und Augustus Saint-Gaudens (1848–1907) trafen sich in den 1870er Jahren in Paris und tauschten Porträts 1887 aus: ein Ölgemälde für eine Bronzerelief. Die ursprüngliche Leinwand wurde in Saint-Gaudens 1904 Studiofeuer verloren, so Cox erstellte diese Replik in der Zeit für die Gedenkausstellung des Bildhauers 1908. Saint-Gaudens wird in seinem New Yorker Studio gezeigt, das in Ton eine Porträtrelief des Künstlers William Merritt Chase modelliert. Eine bronzene Ähnlichkeit des Sohnes des Bildhauers, Homer, hängt an der Wand (das Museum besitzt eine Marmorreplikation; 05.15.2). Cox erinnerte geschickt an seine Porträt Reliefs seines Freundes, indem er ihn im Profil zeigte.
