Lambert Sigisbert Adam (1710-1771) schuf diese Marmorkopie nach dem Ares Ludovisi 1730 als Dankesgeschenk an König Ludwig XV. von Frankreich (1710-1774) für das mit dem Grand Prix de Sculpture von 1723 verwirklichtde Stipendium, das er einen mehrjährigen Studienaufenthalt in Rom ermöglichtee. Es ist die Kopie nach dem Werk des späten 4. Jahrhundert v. Chr. folgende römische Kopie im Thermenmuseum in Rom. Mit vier weiteren Skulpturen gelangen die Skulptur 1750 als Geschenk des französischen Königs an Friedrich II. von Preußen, der sie im Vestibül von Schloss Sanssouci aufstellen. (Saskia Hüneke)
